Beaches of Sfakia

The southern coast of Crete is home to some of the most beautiful and unspoilt beaches of the island. From small village coves to hidden stretches of coastline framed by cliffs, each beach offers a different way to encounter the sea. Many can be reached on foot, by boat, or along the quiet coastal paths that weave through this wild landscape.

Vrisi — the village beach

Vrisi (“mountain spring”) is the village beach of Chora Sfakion and lies just a 10 minute walk from the house. The white pebbles and clear turquoise water create a simple, beautiful setting for swimming and quiet time by the sea. Fed by springs from the White Mountains, the water is remarkably fresh and clear.

Ilingas Beach

Ilingas (“vertigo”), located about 1.5 km from our village, is known for its striking cliffs and exceptionally clear water. The small cove below offers a calm place to swim, while the elevated viewpoint reveals one of the most dramatic coastal landscapes in the region.

Sweet Water Beach

Sweet Water Beach takes its name from the fresh water springs that emerge beneath the pebbles. These springs give the sea its remarkable clarity and a subtle, almost luminous quality. The beach can be reached by boat from Sfakia (10 minutes) or by walking along the coastal path (1 hour walk).

Loutro

Loutro is a small seaside village accessible only by boat (15 minutes) or on foot (2 hours walk from Sfakia). With no cars and a slow, relaxed rhythm of life, it offers a glimpse of a simpler coastal culture. Many visitors combine a swim in its crystal waters with a meal at one of the small harbor tavernas.

Marmara Beach

Marmara Beach lies at the exit of the Aradaina Gorge and takes its name from the marble formations that surround the small cove. The contrast between the white stone cliffs and the deep blue water creates one of the most beautiful swimming spots along the southern coast.

Orthi Ammos

Orthi Ammos (“vertical sand”), near the Venetian fortress of Frangokastelo, is one of the few sandy beaches in the region. The dunes and wide horizon give it a wild, open character. According to local legend, the mysterious Drosoulites — “mist-men” on horseback — can sometimes be seen here in the early morning mist.

Nearby beaches and hiking excursions

Beyond the beaches close to Sfakia, Southern Crete offers many other places worth exploring — from remote stretches of coastline, such as Aghios Pavlos Beach, to some of the most rewarding hiking landscapes in Greece. From coastal paths to dramatic mountain gorges, the terrain invites exploration at many different levels.

One of the most memorable walks leads through the Aradaina Gorge, a spectacular canyon that descends from the abandoned mountain village of Aradaina to the sea at Marmara Beach. The trail follows an ancient stone path once used as the only connection between the villages of the region, before continuing along the dry riverbed toward the coast.

Other popular routes include the Imbros Gorge, a scenic two-hour walk through narrow rock passages, and the famous Samaria Gorge, one of Europe’s longest and most impressive canyon hikes.

For those seeking higher landscapes, the White Mountains offer remarkable trails, including the ascent to Pachnes, the highest peak of the Lefka Ori range at 2453 m. If interested, we’ll be happy to help you arrange such a hike with our collaborator Vaggelis Papasifakis, a highly experienced, professional, local mountain guide.

Seasonally, guests may also join local activities such as herb picking in the mountains or visits connected with traditional bee-keeping.

The coastline around Sfakia

The southern coast of Crete is shaped by mountains, hidden beaches, and small seaside villages. The map below shows the key places mentioned on this page, from the village beach of Vrisi to the remote shores of Marmara and the hiking routes through Aradaina and Imbros Gorge.

Additional activities

On the fourth day of each week-long retreat, guests may join an optional guided excursion (at an additional cost, depending on group size).

Individual outings can also be arranged, including coastal walks, boat trips to neighboring villages and beaches, snorkeling excursions, and scuba diving lessons through the local diving center.

Southern Crete offers a rare combination of sea, mountain, history, and silence. Whether walking through a gorge, resting on a quiet beach, or sailing toward a hidden village, each excursion is an invitation to step outside routine and into something elemental.

The landscape here does not overwhelm — it reveals itself slowly, to those who take the time to walk it. These moments are part of the wider experience of staying at YogaOnCrete.
