Joyful eating — a ritual of longevity
At our restored home, life gathers around the communal table.
Joyful Eating is not simply about the food, but about the intention behind it. Sharing a meal is a vital extension of the practice, as true wellbeing is nourished not only by what we eat, but by the joy of the company we keep. Around the table, stories unfold, laughter rises, and silence is shared without effort. In these moments, nourishment becomes relational.
Our table is a ritual of longevity and vitality. Rooted in Cretan tradition, these gatherings fulfil a deeper human need for belonging. As dishes are passed and flavours savoured, the mindfulness cultivated during practice meets the healing presence of community, sustaining both body and spirit.
The cretan table
The Cretan diet is renowned not only for its macrobiotic qualities, but for its remarkable variety of fresh and vibrant flavors. Yet what makes Cretan cuisine truly special is not only the ingredients themselves, but the way food is prepared — almost as a ritual — with love, care, and the intention of offering it to others.
Cooking here is never mechanical. It is an act of hospitality, generosity, and presence.
Our chef, Tassos, embodies this spirit, preparing nourishing lacto-vegetarian meals each day using local ingredients and, whenever possible, organic products — some grown in our own garden. Meals are crafted with simplicity and attention, honouring both tradition and the rhythm of the seasons.
In yogic philosophy, the quality of our mind is closely connected to the quality of our food. Certain foods are said to create dullness (tamas), others restlessness (rajas), and others clarity and balance (sattva). While we do not follow rigid doctrines, we are guided by the intention to prepare meals that support steadiness, vitality, and ease.
Food becomes part of the practice.
A Day at the table
Brunch
Brunch is gentle and grounding: warm homemade muesli or cooked grains with fruit and nuts, yoghurt from sheep or cows depending on the season, fresh bread, local honey, tahini, handmade preserves, and herbal teas. Seasonal fruits and freshly squeezed juices accompany slow conversations and quiet mornings.
Dinner
Dinner is abundant and colourful. Vegetable and grain-based soups, stuffed vegetables, risottos made from diverse grains, traditional dishes such as ntakos and local greens with lemon and olive oil, hearty Greek salads, and wholesome desserts based on fruit, nuts, dairy, or grains. The meals are simple yet generous, familiar yet alive with flavour.
Throughout the day, herbal teas, coffees and fresh fruit are always available.
Beyond Our Table
Two evenings during each week-long stay, guests are invited to explore the nearby village restaurants, just a short walk away. There, fresh fish, local specialties, and traditional dishes offer another way to encounter the richness of Cretan culinary life. Many guests also discover the local bakery, whose breads and sweets reflect the warmth of village culture.
Joyful Eating is not about perfection. It is about presence.
It is about coming together without hurry. About listening while passing the olives. About noticing how the body feels when it is fed with care. About discovering how conversation changes when there is no rush to leave the table.
In a world that often separates nourishment from connection, we return to something older and simpler: food as offering, food as dialogue, food as gratitude.
Come to the table as you are.
Leave feeling sustained — in body, in heart, and in community.
